The full title of this classification is National Security Resources Board, Special Inquiry. In 1949 the FBI agreed to investigate all National Security Resources Board employees or applicants from the standpoint of character, reputation, loyalty, and security. The NSRB was a civl defense/economic mobilization agency established in 1947; in 1953 it was absorbed into the newly created Office of Civil Defense Mobilization (the National Archives has accessioned 437 feet of records of this organization in Record Group 304). The FBI ceased investigations and declared the classification obsolete in 1950.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Each plant survey was a separate case file, with the survey, supplemental surveys, and all communications dealing with a plant insofar as plant protection was concerned, filed together.
